MR RENTON'S VISIT TO HONG KONG

144

1. I discussed Hong Kong telno 1972 with Mr Renton this morning. He is content with the revised programme, and does not expect to have any difficulty with the walking/ standing described in paragraph 2. He would, however, be grateful if someone could have a stick handy in case he needs one.

2. I told Mr Renton that you had reservations about his idea of giving an up-beat speech about Britain as a successful and exciting trading partner for Hong Kong. He accepted that it might not be appropriate to make a major speech of this kind on his first visit to Hong Kong, but he hopes that there will be an occasion when he can make a public speech covering both Britain's commitment to the future of Hong Kong and, fairly briefly, the state of the economy back home.
