MR RENTON'S TRAVEL PLANS
In the light of the replies received to FCO telno 821 to Peking, Mr Renton has considered the options for visiting FED and SEAD countries next year.
1.
2. As you know, Mr Renton is visiting Hong Kong and Indonesia at the end of this month. He will probably not be able to make more than one further trip to the region before late 1986. Other Ministers' travel plans, and posts' comments, suggest that this trip might usefully take place in the second half of January. Bearing in mind the Secretary of State's preference for Ministerial trips not to exceed two weeks, and the need to do justice to each leg of the tour, Mr Renton is inclined to limit himself to the three countries of highest priority. He believes that these should be Thailand, China and Japan.
3. I attach a suggested itinerary. Subject to any comments you may have, I should be grateful if you could put these plans to the posts concerned. Provided they are content, I will then seek the Secretary of State's approval.
