1. In accordance with FCO circular B113/83 of 1 December 1983 the Sub-committee of the Ministerial Visits Committee will meet later this month to consider detailed proposals from Departments for visits overseas by the Secretary of State and other FCO Ministers during the period September to and including the Christmas recess. The main task of the Sub-committee will be

to judge between the competing bids for Ministers' time and to draw attention to the proposals which they deem to be of particular importance.

2.

Departments will wish to know that the Secretary of State has expressed an interest in making the following visits:

Nigeria, plus one other West African country

Southern Africa including South Africa and Mozambique or

Angola

Brazil and Mexico

The Gulf

Canada

There is also a proposal, I believe, that the Secretary of State might visit the Sub-continent.

3. I would be grateful if Departments would send their proposals to Mr Gibbs, as Chairman of the Sub-committee, via their AUSSs by 19 April. It would be helpful if copies could be sent to me direct please.
