interesting to have the opportunity in view of all that is going on in mainland China at the present time and also because it is a very important period in the relationship between IIK and China. I will try to go to China very goun,
Scanlon: Is there any reason why you could not have stepped into Mr Luce's showeŭ and taken on the trip that he would have taken on this
month7
Mer Rentoni Oh yea, there is a very specific reason. I had planned to have a hip
replacement operation beginning this week. I so actually
peuking to you from a hospital bed. Having had that operation, I shan't be out of hospital for some time next week. And it takes a few weeke simply to recover, to get round walking again on my new bionic
hip
That's the only reason.
Scanlon: When you come to HK, what will be on your agenda? Who are the people you are most intent on seeing while you are here?
Ar Renton: I can't anawer that at this stage. I want obviously to go over with officials in the Foreign Office and with the officials in lik very carefully what Richard Luce's plans were for the trip and I plan - I hope he's going to Blan to talk to Richard Luce himself next week come to visit me. And after that I will be armed to answer that questlụn. Put ] En afraid I am not ready to answer that yet,
Scanlon: Would you be making a special point of seeing people from all
walks of life...
Mr Kenton: I know that was always Richard Lucole ale. I fully understand it and I would strongly believe that it would be my la es well. Clearly in a trip of this nature, one is always constrained by the amount of time available. Ministers, in their busy lives, have nover had as such ting as they would like to have. But I will be, I'd said, listening very carefully to what Bichard Lucu had in mind for this trip and following along hia Buggestions and those of my officials at the Foreign Office.
