to visit their relatives in Hong Kong on an individual

basis and a substantial number of official or business

trips made by Chinese residents for attending seminars, doing business or studying manufacturing and managerial techniques in Hong Kong (For example, the Chinese Chamber of Commerce has organised a number of training courses for

Chinese government officials). According to a report compiled by Immigration Department, a total of 2,756 separate PRC official delegations, comprising 12,299 people, visited Hong Kong in the second quarter of 1985. At the end of June 1985 there were 3,473 PRC officials

working in Hong Kong.

(a) Hong Kong's investments in China

According to a report released by China's Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations and Trade, in the past five years from 1980 to end 1984, there were 931 equity joint ventures set up in China with a total pledged investment of US$1.38 billion. Investors from Hong Kong and Macau topped the list. They have been engaged in 700 equity joint ventures with a total pledged investment of US$800 million.

On the basis of newspaper reports, in the first

half of 1985 there were a number of notable investment

projects in China involving Hong Kong companies. First, New World Development Company has pledged US$45 million. for a 15-year contract to build a large hotel complex in Xi'an, Shaanxi. Second, two joint venture hotels will be built in Guilin. The 10-storey Xing Jiang Hotel which will cost HK$67.5 million is a joint venture between the China Travel Service (Guilin) and the Hong Kong Hau Hoi
