CHINA'S INVESTMENT IN HONG KONG

This paper is a report on the present situation

in respect of China's investment in Hong Kong. The

principal sources of information include press cuttings from newspapers and journals, and a document entitled "Hong Kong Companies having Chinese interest known to

Industry Department" prepared by the Industry Department.

In addition to these, there have also been discussions

with selected persons who are known to have research

interest in this field. However, the picture is

inevitably incomplete given the limited availability of

systematic and reliable data and the problems of tracing

the beneficial ownership of Hong Kong firms.

2.

But

Activities like travel services, air freight

business and newspaper publishing carried out by such

China-interest agencies as China Travel Service (HK) Ltd.,

China National Aviation Corporation (representative office of CAAC in Hong Kong) and the various newspaper corporations are widely known to people in Hong Kong.

these activities have not been discussed in detail because

they do not represent investment on a significant scale in

Hong Kong. Also widely known is the New China News Agency

which is regarded by the general public as China's

"diplomatic" representative in Hong Kong but again its

activities have not been discussed as this agency does not

play a direct role in economic activities.
