Question: Will Government inform this Council

whether there are plans to fill the

post of Government Scientist?

Answer

:

Sir,

There are no immediatè plans to fill the post

of Government Scientist, pending a fresh look at the

necessity for such an appointment.

The review will cover an examination of the

fundamental role of the Government Scientist vis-a-vis

other Government departments with responsibilities in

this area, such as the Industry Department, the

Government Laboratory, the Royal Observatory and the

Environmental Protection Agency. A further

consideration is whether a single individual will be

able to provide advice on the many disciplines of

science which are of a highly specialised nature, or

whether we should rely on consultants for such advice.
