In view of the large number of students who travel in school children vans everyday, will Government inform this Council:

(a) what are the number and types of

school children vans presently registered with the Transport Department;

(b)

(c)

whether existing legislation governing school children vans is adequate to meet present needs; and

what measures will Government adopt to ensure that students get on and off the vans safely?

sir,

A total of 1,598 van-type vehicles are registered

with the Transport Department as being used for school

transport. This figure is made up of 1,430 light buses

with between 7 and 14 seats which have been registered as

private light buses (school service) and 168 seven-seater

vans which have been registered as private cars and issued

with school hire car permits.
