Question No. 6

Will the Government provide this Council with a breakdown of the amount of tax assessed as irrecoverable for the financial year 1984-85 and indicate how this figure compares with the amounts assessed as irrecoverable at this time in the three preceding years?

REPLY BY THE HONOURABLE THE FINANCIAL SECRETARY IN LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL: WEDNESDAY 26 JUNE 1985

Sir,

If I understand Mrs Fan's question correctly,

I think what she has in mind is the amount of tax

written-off as irrecoverable in the financial year 1984-85 and the three preceding years.

2.

Tax assessed in any financial year would not

normally be considered as irrecoverable until all possible recovery procedures had been pursued.

3.

As to the figures, the amount of tax written- off as irrecoverable in the financial year 1984-85 was $27.46 million.

In the three preceding financial years, the amounts written-off were $10.22 million, $7.51 million and $12.14 million respectively.
