8. I asked how this happy result could be brought about. Mr XU said that we needed to understand more of eachothers ideas. I asked whether this meant that China was prepared to discuss with us the projected contents of the Basic Law. Mr XU replied that we could exchange ideas, either dipomatically or on a personal basis.

Finally, Sir Peter suggested that the aim in 1997 should be to ensure that the minimum possible change took place on 1 July in order to ensure a smooth transition. XU said that he fully agreed with this statement.
