26 SEPTEMBER 1985

Introduction

A

1.

B

In response to my submission of 25 September on

inter alia the LEGCO elections, Mr Renton asked how the

elections went. We have since received a report from Hong

180 Kong in their Telegram number 2030 on the results of the election. Hong Kong Department have also monitored Hong Kong press comment during the week since the elections in order to assess the popular response in Hong Kong to this

crucial

the territory's constitutional

step

development.

The Elections

2.

in

The elections themselves produced

themselves produced few surprises.

Most candidates returned were members of the professional

classes, all well-known and with experience of

of community

service. Turnout varied from almost 100% in the electoral

college to a lowest turnout

of

45% in one of the two

constituencies for the industrial sector. The

functional

Hong Kong Government's polling arrangements appear to have been executed smoothly and without hitch.
