constitute an understanding between the two Governments on this

matter, which will come into operation on the date on which the

Government of the United Kingdom notifies the Government of the

People's Republic of China that the procedures required to give

effect to this understanding have been completed.

The Ministry avails itself of this opportunity to renew to

the Embassy the assurances of its highest consideration.

In reply, the British Embassy in China has the honour to

confirm that the above proposals are acceptable to the Government

of the United Kingdom, and that the Ministry's Note and this Note

of reply will constitute an understanding between the two

Governments on this matter, which will come into operation

on the date on which the Government of the United Kingdom

notifies the Government of the People's Republic of China

that the procedures required to give effect to this understanding

have been completed.

The British Embassy avail themselves of this opportunity

to renew to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs the assurances of

their highest consideration.
