The British Embassy in China presents its compliments to
the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of
the People's Republic of China and has the honour to acknowledge
receipt of the Department's Note (84) Ling Si Zi No 50 of
14 April which in translation reads as follows:
The Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
of the People's Republic of China present their compliments to
the British Embassy in China and has the honour to state as
follows:
The following understanding, which incorporates proposals
put forward by both sides, has been reached through consultations
between the Consular Department of the Foreign Ministry of the
PRC and the British Embassy in China on new arrangements to be
made by the British authorities in Hong Kong for Chinese citizens
travelling via Hong Kong for private purposes:
1. The Hong Kong Immigration Department will normally
grant 7 days' stay in Hong Kong to Chinese citizens travelling
via Hong Kong for private purposes, provided that they have valid
ordinary Chinese passports or travel permits, entry visas for the
country of destination or a letter from the authorities of the
country of destination agreeing to issue the visa in Hong Kong,
and proof that they will continue their journey.
