Paragraph 8 of the record of the Foreign Secretary's meeting allch with Deng Ziaoping contains the statement that "we would continue to sustain [the Hong Kong dollar] as we had done in the past" (tel no. 2176 of 31 July).

2. I imagine that "we" in this context was intended to refer to the Hong Kong Government and the Exchange Fund. I am probably being unnecessarily sensitive. But I would be grateful for reassurance that no commitments have been given to the Chinese about UK support

for the Hong Kong dollar other than from the Exchange Fund.
