Whatever presents are chosen, we would like the suggestion to be made to No 10 that, if appropriate, they should be accompanied by attractive explanatory material which could also make a number of useful points. For instance, if the table were chosen, the workshop could be asked to provide background on the particular tree from which it was made (the timber is chosen individually by Mr Makepeace) together with appropriate details of the workshop tools used to make it, many of which may be excellent examples of current British high quality design and tooling. The same could go for the books and, in the case of the computers it would be a distinct advantage to include a certain amount of explanatory software. We might even have time to discuss with the company whether anything could be provided which was tailor-made to

the occasion (eg the text of the Joint Declaration on Hong Kong with the date of signature ready to added by Premier Zhao.
