wound up by the end of November if other procedures were to be

completed before the end of the year. I said that in all those

circumstances Sir Patrick would probably need to travel to

Hong Kong in the last week of September. Attendance at Leeds Castle

would probably be possible: remaining in Oxford in the first days

of October would almost certainly not be possible.

Sir Patrick said that he would want to think the matter over

further, and discuss it in the strictest confidence with his wife

and with the Senior Fellow of his college. He hoped he might be able

to telephone tomorrow to let us know his decision. In any event he

would be coming to London on Wednesday 15 August, and he hoped he

might be able to discuss any remaining details with the Department

then. He appreciated that we would like to know his decision

earlier than that if at all possible.

5. Sir Patrick expressed the hope that he might be able to speak

briefly to Mr Luce on the telephone tomorrow, and to call on

Mr Luce when he is in London on 15 August. We discussed this and

you agreed to speak to Sir Patrick to explain Mr Luce's

over the next few days.
