1. I have spoken to Sir Patrick Nairne to follow up your conversation with him earlier this morning. I said that we very much understood that there were matters he would have to resolve before finally making up his mind, but that I knew Mr Luce would be very pleased indeed that he was disposed to react favourably to our approach to him. I was sure that Mr Luce would want to talk to him personally about all this on the telephone, if it did not prove possible to arrange a meeting and suggested Tuesday 14 August as a possible date.
Who wouldst se! 2. Sir Patrick was clearly pleased by the call. He confirmed that he hoped to be able to take this on, but would need to talk first to his family and to the College authorities. He would let us know finally in a day or two. It transpired that he would be in London for the day on 14 August, and could therefore manage a meeting in the office. I have therefore made an appointment for him to see the Minister of State in the office at 3.30, and would welcome a brief before then.
