The Rt. Hon. Sir Patrick Nairne GCB MC MA

Sir Patrick Nairne has been Master of St. Catherine's College Oxford since 1981 and Chancellor of the University of Essex since 1983.

He is an Hon. Fellow of University College, Oxford and also an Hon.Dr. of Laws of Leicester University and an Hon. Dr. of the University of Essex. He received an Hon. LL.D. at St. Andrews University this year.

Sir Patrick entered the Home Civil Service in 1947 after taking a First Class Honours degree in Modern History at the University of Oxford. He served first in the Admiralty and Ministry of Defence, rising to the rank of Deputy Under-Secretary of State. He subsequently became Second Permanent Secretary in the Cabinet Office, serving as Chairman of the European Unit, between 1973 and 1975. From Autumn 1975 until Summer 1981 he was Permanent Secretary of the Department of Health and Social Security.

Sir Patrick was made a Commander of the Bath in 1971 and was knighted in the same order in 1975. In 1982 he was advanced to the rank of Knight Grand Cross. He was made a Privy Councillor in 1982.

During the 1939-45 War Sir Patrick served in the Seaforth Highlanders and fought with the 51st Highland Division in North Africa, Sicily, and Northwest Europe. He received the Military Cross after the Sicily campaign in 1943; and he finished his career as Adjutant of the 5th (Caithness and Sutherland) Battalion of the Seaforth Highlanders.

Since 1981 Sir Patrick has served as a member of the Falkland Islands Review Committee under Lord Franks. He is a Trustee of the National Maritime Museum, and of the Joseph Rowntree Memorial Trust; a member of the Councils of the Royal College of Art and of Voluntary Service Overseas; a member of the West Midlands Board of Central Television and President of the National Television Rental Association. He is also Chairman of the Society for Italic Handwriting. His recreations are watercolour painting and calligraphy.
