Thank you for your letter of 15 August.

I am

grateful to you for sending me a copy of the statement

which you sent to Wu Xueqian. I have had very much in

mind the points you made to me about your fears for the

future in your earlier letter.

I said on 1 August in Hong Kong that the people of Hong Kong could look forward with confidence to an agreement which inter alia would provide for the preservation of all the rights and freedoms which the people of Hong Kong enjoy today. These freedoms include

the freedom of religion. I also made it clear that the

agreement and its annexes would all be legally binding.

It was good of you to keep me in touch with your

views. I remain confident that the Catholic Church will

be well-placed to continue to play its present important

role in the community of Hong Kong after 1997.
