SPEAKING NOTE FOR THE LEADER OF THE HOUSE OF COMMONS

LINE TO TAKE

>

Her Majesty's Government remain committed, in the Sino-British talks on Hong Kong's future, to seek a settlement which will maintain Hong Kong's stability and prosperity and be acceptable to Parliament China and the people of Hong Kong. HMGs policy

towards all aspects of Hong Kong's future was set

out in the speech of my Right Honourable and Learned Friend the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs in the House on 16 May.

NOTES FOR SUPPLEMENTARIES

What Attention is Paid to Views of Hong Kong People?

1. There is a continuous process of consulation with

the people of Hong Kong on all matters relating to the territory's future. A wide range of channels has evolved in Hong Kong through which people make their views known. We particularly value our regular discussions with the Governor and the Unofficial

members of the Executive Council who are well placed to reflect the opinions of Hong Kong people. In addition, ministerial visits to Hong Kong and the reception of Hong Kong delegations to London provide useful opportunities to further the consultative process.
