BUSINESS STATEMENT : 26 APRIL : HONG KONG : LIBYA : ARGENTINE SUBMARINES : CHILE
1.
After the Business Statement on 26 April, Mr Kinnock asked for a debate on the Hong Kong negotiations. He was supported by Mr Robert Adley who asked also for a statement on the return of the Secretary of State. Mr Biffen said he was hopeful that a debate could take place in the week beginning 14 May.
2. Mr Kinnock also asked for the House to be kept informed of developments regarding the Libyan Peoples Bureau. Mr Robert Kilroy-Silk added a request for a statement on why, after the bombings in London and Manchester, the Libyans being trained at defence establishments had not been deported. Mr Biffen said he
would refer the matter to the Home Secretary.
3.
Mr Peter Bruinvels sought an urgent debate on the security implications for the Falkland Islands of the purchase by Argentina of six submarines. Mr Biffen suggested the matter be raised during the debate on defence estimates.
4.
Mr Robert Parry drew attention to EDM 658 on human rights in Chile. In his reply Mr Biffen said he would draw it to the attention of the Secretary of State.
5. Mr Dennis Skinner believed the government had double standards in dealing with foreign and internal policies. He compared the policies regarding Col Gaddafi, China/Hong Kong and the possible loan of £260 million to the EC against trying to starve the miners into submission. Mr Biffen made a suitable response.
6. I attach the relevant extracts from Hansard, Vol 58, No 143.
