Visit to Hong Kong by Madam LI Zhao,

wife of Mr. HU Yaobang

You should know that Madam LI Zhao paid a brief visit to Hong Kong recently. I was telephoned by Mr. JI Shaoxiang of NCNA on 24 October who said that a group of "elderly ladies" who were personal friends of Mr. XU Jiatun, Mr. LI Chuwen and Mr. WANG Guangying, would be arriving on the following day from Peking, and asked for VIP facilities. We subsequently heard a rumour that the wife of HU Yaobang might be coming to town, and I asked Mr. JI whether she was one of the elderly ladies. Mr. JI confirmed that she was, but was very agitated that the news appeared to have got out, since NCNA were very keen to keep Madam LI Zhao's presence in Hong Kong secret. We were able to bend the usual rules about provision of VIP facilities to enable Madam LI and her companions to use the VIP lounge, and Lady Youde invited Madam LI to tea at Government House on 26 October.

At the tea party, Madam LI explained that she was a senior adviser to the Peking Children's Toys Institute, and handed Lady Youde a card with the names and positions of herself and her companions in the group visiting Hong Kong, together with an explanation of the Institute's aims and functions, copies of which I enclose.
