An Outline of the Study

Full details of how the study was conducted can be found in Volume Four. In brief, a ran- dom probability sampling method was employed. The objective was to obtain a final sample of 6,000 adults (aged 18 years or over) representative of the total adult population of Hong Kong, excluding only the marine population. The sampling was carried out in a number of stages:

(a)

(b)

200 Primary Sampling Units (about 1 in 12) were randomly selected from the total.

Within each PSU, all domestic households were visited and listed. This yielded a listing of 101,725 households.

(c)

From this total, 11,713 households were selected at random.

(d)

(e)

Interviewers obtained details at 7,563 households (68%) and at each household, person was selected randomly for interview, from among all adult household members.

Interviews were obtained with 6,264 individuals (83%).

(E)

A total of 140 interviews were rejected either because informants did not qualify for interview or because of quality control criteria. Thus the final analysable sample was 6,124.

An independent Quality Control Committee (Volume 4, Section II) monitored the sampling and fieldwork operation.
