Introduction

As part of the effort to arouse the students' concern about' the '

1997 issue and to let them express their views, a survey was conducted among

Shue Yan College students between 15.5.84 and 8.6.84 to collect their views on

4 broad areas of the issuc, namely

1. Ways to deal with the future of Hong Kong;

2.

3.

Future sovereignty and administration of Hong Kong;

To what degree they believe China will honour its pledges

regarding Hong Kong;

4. The basic law.

The survey was conducted by self-administrative questionnaires

sent to all day and evening students.

2100 questionaries were sent and 1385 were returned, of which 1375

were valid, representing a 65.43% response.

Results of Analysis

The great majority of the students, 75.94, opined that the most rational way in dealing with the futuro of Hong Kong was by

Negotiation by China, U.K. and Hong Kong'.

2. Nearly half, 49.24, favoured the recovery of sovereignty over

Hong Kong by the Boijing government.

When asked if, after 1997 the Beijing govemment takes over the

right of administration of Hong Kong and does not allow

E.K. people to administer Hong Kong, 43.3% of the students
