The Future of Hong Kong :

Opinion Poll

28 AUG 1934

Further to my letter of 6 August 1984, I enclose reports of two opinion polls conducted in May and June by elected members of the Sha Tin District Board and the Survey Research Hong Kong Ltd. respectively.

The first poll in fact comprises of a number of surveys. In common with other amateur polls, its findings need to be treated with some caution. The questionnaires are badly designed and the sampling methodology is unknown. Moreover, the very low response rate hardly gives any confidence in the results.

The second poll was conducted by a professional organisation but there are no details in the report to permit an assessment of the reliability of the survey method. However, the survey sample is obviously small and the conclusions are only gross interpretations of the findings.

Copies of these reports have been circulated

to Unofficials for information.

8.

Yours sincerely,
