FOREWORD
The beginning of Sino-British negotiations on Hong Kong's future in September 1982, an epoch-making event in the history of Hong Kong, sparked off enormous concern among local residents. Undoubtedly, the destiny of every citizen is closely linked to the future arrangement of Hong Kong. Both the British and Chinese governments declared that all future arrangements concerning Hong Kong would certainly take into consideration the expectation and interests of Hong Kong citizens. Thus, the definition of the expectation and interests of Hong Kong's citizens has become the focus of discussions on Hong Kong's future.
Organizations, investors, academics and leading figures of Hong Kong society have open channels such as the mass media, social gatherings and so forth to express their opinions regarding the future of Hong Kong. However, ordinary citizens, the vast majority of the population, rarely has the opportunity to express their views systematically.
We, being elected members of Shamshuipo, feel that it is our responsibility to reflect the views of Shamshuipo's residents regarding the future of Hong Kong to the governments concerned. Therefore, we decided to conduct this survey.
According to the 1981 Census statistics, the population of Shamshuipo West is 210,000. This district, with about half of its population residing in five public housing estates, is a typical working class community. The sampling list of this survey is selected randomly from the Shamshuipo Voters' Registry and household information from the Census and Statistics Department. Data was collected both by mail questionaires and interviews for comparison. This report is a
compilation of processed data derived from 1222 valid questionaires returned.
