Commentary on the General Opinion Survey on Hong

Kong's Future, conducted by IKU Students' Union

HKUSU Ad-hoo Committee on HK's Future

(March 1984)

First-year students' heartening concern in Hong Kong's future

A total of 2,444 questionnaires were returned in this general

opinion survey conducted by the HKUSU, representing 47 per cent of the

Unions membership. The response was considered satisfactory when

compared with other opinion surveys conducted by the Union.

total number of questionnaires returned, 66 per cent were from the

students and 33.7 per cent from their female counterparts (about 2:1).

The percentages show that female students in this survey were far more

responsive as the ratio of female to male students in the University

is 1:3. In addition, responses from students of different levels show

that the higher olass they were in, the less responsive they became.

This is evidenced by the fact that the questionnaires returned by the

third-year students were only about half the number of those returned

by the first-year's.

The first-year students' concern in Hong Kong's future is

encouraging and it is felt that more chances and venues should be

offered in future for further discussions of the issue.
