1. Introduction

In the past few years, the future of Hong Kong has become a

most concerned issue among all walks of life here. It has also been

causing considerable fluctuations in our political and economic con-

ditions. The issue is arousing even more discussions since China

brought forth the formula of 'Hong Kong people ruling Hong Kong at

Mrs. Thatcher's visit to Peking. However, the discussions have been

mainly among intellectuals and professionals, with the masses, lack-

the channels, absent in the forum. We feel as the issue concerns the

future of all the five millions here, the wishes of the masses

should weigh heavy. So we held an opinion survey in the district of

Sham Shui Po East on the issue.

1.1 The aim of the survey is to collect opinions on the issue 'the

future of Hong Kong' among the residents (above 18 years of age) in

the district. We also hope such a survey would arouse broader dis-

cussions among the population. The opinions found would be reflected

to the Chinese and British Governments and to the general public.

1.2 There are 16 items in the questionaire covering:

1.2.1 their attitude towards the formula of 'Hong Kong people

ruling Hong Kong';

1.2.2 their demands on the actual contents of the formula;

1.2.3 the way they think the people should participate in the

drafting and practice of the set of basic laws (on the future

of Hong Kong);

1.2.4 what

reforms.

Hong Kong should take in the transition

period;

1.2.5 their opinions on general life quality in Hong Kong at present;

and

1.2.6 background information of the respondents.
