(II) As regards the dia sotions in which the community of

Hong Kong should develop during the ransition period (1984 - 1997),

the students were asked to indicate how far they agreed or disagreed with 6 proposed directions for development:

(1) "Gradual adoption of popular elections for the Legislative

and Executive Councils".

The most popular answer was "agree". 1,207

respondents gave this answer, representing 50.7% of the valid questionnaires, If this figure were added to the 991 students (41.6% of all valid qeustionnaires) who "strongly agree", the total no. of respondents who favoured this proposal would account for 92.3% of all valid questionnaires.

(2) "Expansion of power of distriot boards". The most popular

answer was "agree". 1,259 respondents gave this answer, representing 52.9% of all valid questionnaires. If this figure were added to the 455 students (19.1% of all valid questionnaires) who "strongly agree", the total no. of respondents who favoured this proposed direction would aooount for 72% of all valid questionnaires. 517 students remained "neutral", representing 21.7% of all valid questionnaires.

(3) "Localization in upper echelon of the Civil Servi08."

The most popular answer was "agree". 1,093 respondents gave this answer,
