Background
2
The extensive area
area of Crown land situated behind the buildings at Nos. 131A-139 Queen's Road East is a steep slope which extends up to Kennedy Road. The slope is intersected by public footpaths. The lower section
section of this slope extending to about 20 metres high is a steep cut slope ranging from 500 near the crest to 900 near the toe.
The toe of the cut
slope is only about 2 metres from the buildings.
3
Analysis of the stability of this cut slope indicates that the slope is liable to become dangerous in its present condition. The occurrance of any adverse weather condition such as heavy and prolonged rain may result in failure of the whole slope. Indeed, the slope has a history of instability with two failure scars evident on the slope.
4
As a long term measure to ensure the stability of this slope, the Director of Engineering Development has proposed that landslip preventative works should be carried out as a matter of urgency. These works would include the construction
of a cantilever caisson wall near the middle section of the cut slope to enable the uphill side of the wall to be
to be backfilled and the slope on the downhill side of the wall to be cut back so that the newly formed slope on both sides of the wall will be of a much reduced gradient.
5
These works have been included in the Landslip Preventative Measures annual programme for 1983/84 which is in Category A of the Public Works Programme under Item No. LPM 33. Works on site have been scheduled to commence in March 1984 and will take about 24 months to complete.
