The half yearly figures for the German textile industry are generally good, with increased production in most sectors. feared second half stagnation has not taken place although the weak state of the retail trade is expected to affect production sooner or later.

(33) According to a study by the ifo Institute for Economic Research,

the majority of German clothing manufacturers questioned

declared their intention to strengthen their overseas production before 1986.

(34) Hong Kong's Sportswear Show proved that Hong Kong is not only

the world's largest exporter of clothing, but that it is shaking off its cheap image through the creativity of its own designers and the high quality but very competitive goods.

The Sportswear Show was also reported in the trade magazine, Boutiques de France (Paris).

Miscellaneous items this month included:

An article on accidents in the home in the influential Brussels daily, La Libre Belgique. Under the section on suffocation, the article warns of small objects and detachable parts of toys which a small child can swallow all too easily. The author notes that "Although there are a certain number of security norms imposed on manufacturers in neighbouring (EEC) countries, there are no international norms so that toys from Asia (Taiwan, Hong Kong ...) slip through and avoid them".

A report in Antwerp's Financieel Economisch Tijd on the opening in Hong Kong of the first diamond exchange in January 1985.

(3))- A report in several Dutch regional papers that the Dutch

publishing company VNU has established a company in Hong Kong together with a Singapore organisation to publish computer magazines and books for the South East Asian area.

(38)- A feature article in the weekly Hamburg magazine, Praline, on

Hong Kong for tourists.

(39) A report in The Hague's Economisch Dagblad on publishers' attacks

on the illegal copying of books in Hong Kong which cost their companies millions of dollars in lost revenue.

(40)- A series of articles written by Karl-Hugo Dierichs in the

Düsseldorf based Westdeutsche Zeitung entitled "Hong Kong:

Sanctuary for Millions", which dealt with the work of voluntary organisations and churches in Hong Kong.

(41) Short reports in Copenhagen's Berlingske Tidende on the planned

new harbour tunnel and Hong Kong Land's decision to sell the Excelsior Hotel.
