Essential Facts

1. New Zealand butter exports to the EC a five year arrangement, 83,000 tonnes in 1984, reducing by 2,000 tonnes annually to 79,000 tonnes in 1986. Quantities for 1987 and 1988 to be determined the previous year on basis of commission report and proposal. Provision for decision on prolongation of arrangements after January 1989 on bais of commission report and proposal.

2. Following protests by New Zealand and Australia in particular, Commission delayed implementation of latest scheme to allow time for consultations with trading partners.

Joint draft resolution by EC, New Zealand and Australia with formula which would preserve the International Dairy Arrangement was accepted by the International Dairy Council on 16 November. Commission has undertaken to rescind regulations as soon as possible after sales have taken place; International Dairy Council will review situation at its next meeting set for 12 December 1984.
