POINTS TO MAKE

1. The additional £46 million provided in 1983 for a 3 year period is funding an extra 5,000 awards (lobally) each year. Rather more than half of the £46 million is being spent on Commonwealth students.

£42.5 million was allocated to scholarships for 9,730 Commonwealth students under HMG supported schemes in 1983/84 as follows :-

3. In 1984/85 these programmes are not only all continuing but

some have increased. £2 million is being provided for the Malaysian Fee Support Scheme;

£1.75 million for the Hong Kong

Support Scheme and the FCO Discretionary Awards Scheme has been

replaced by the Scholarships and Awards Scheme under which

£1 million has been allocated to the Commonwealth.
