HONG KONG: MESSAGE TO THE PRIME MINISTER FROM THE AUSTRALIAN PRIME MINISTER

Thank you for your minute of 16 February and for giving me the opportunity to comment on your draft reply from the Prime Minister to Mr Hawke's message.

1.

I have only two comments, one concerning the draft and the other concerning Mr Hawke.

2.

3.

The Prime Minister has met Mr Hawke in Delhi and they discussed Hong Kong. I suggest the tone of the letter might reflect this. The attached redraft is I think a little more friendly and reduces the risk of Mr Hawke feeling that he is being put back in the classroom.

4. In submitting your reply to the PM, I should be grateful if you could convey the information, which is public knowledge, that the TUC have invited Mr Hawke to visit Britain in July to attend the 150th celebrations of the Tolpuddle Martyrs.
