MEETING OF UK COMMANDERS IN CHIEF COMMITTEE: 12 DECEMBER

4 Decpse

1. At a meeting of the UK Commanders in Chief Committee on Wednesday 12 December, Mr Alston will be asked to give a survey of 'Current Political Topics''. He will be expected to speak for around 15 minutes with about 10 minutes or so thereafter for questions. The session will be entirely off the record.

Given the limited time available it will clearly not be possible for Mr Alston to give more than a very brief overview of the main topics. I should be grateful, however, if Departments could let me have a few points to make on the following item(s) which fall(s) to them and which are likely to be of interest to the Commanders in Chief. Background material is not required, but it would be helpful if contributions could be kept as short as possible and in a form which Mr Alston can actually use:

i) East/West relations;

ii) Arms control;

iii) Iran/Iraq conflict;

iv) Cyprus;

v) Greece/Turkey in NATO;
