You will have seen the reference in the press telegram for 11 December to Messrs. XU Jiatun's and WANG Guangying's presence at the inauguration of a new nightclub. Your intrepid correspondent considered that the report in the telegram under reference failed to do justice to the press coverage of the event, and wished you to have the enclosed cutting from the Sing Tao daily. The practice of making people 'wear hats' is supposed to have been stopped, but the driver of the car (who is obviously an amalgam of Mr. XU and Mr. WANG, thinly camouflaged behind an imperialist moustache and a political adviser's pipe) does not appear to have realised this: maybe "dai gao mao zi" is acceptable now that those erstwhile idols Marx, Lenin and Engels have been officially acknowledged by the People's Daily to have feet of clay.

The background to the involvement of XU and WANG is a typically byzantine Hong Kong story. The driving force behind the new night club is Fung Sun-chong, a leading member of the Far East Stock Exchange. XU and WANG were apparently persuaded to attend via the good offices of Mrs. Anna Chennault, of Flying Tigers fame, who is FUNG Sun-chong's sister-in-law, and whose recent visit to China marked the culmination of a successful united front operation on her.
