HONG KONG DEPARTMENT: FAMILIARISATION VISITS

1.

11/1

In your manuscript noto on my minute of 17 August attached you agreed in principle that Miss Walker and Mr Hum should visit Hong Kong and asked to see costings before giving confirmation.

2.

As Miss Walker has not visited Hong Kong before, I think it would be useful for her to have a full two weeks there, as Mr Morris did last year. On this basis, the cost of the visit would be:

(a)

Return passage (Club class)

(b)

Subsistence for 14 nights (Class A rate)

£1200.00

£ 792.68

£1992.68

However

However, PSD are now encouraging the use of Apex fares to save money. With the length of the journey and the need for people to be ready to work in Hong Kong, Club is desirable if possible. if necessary Miss Walker has no objection to being downgraded from Club to economy class. This would reduce the cost of the return passage to £450, and to tal cost to £1242.68. (Reduction of the period of the visit to 10 days would further reduce the cost by £169.86.

3.

I have not of course had the opportunity to discuss Mr Hum's visit with him. As he has recently served in Poking and no doubt visited Hong Kong on several occasions from there since doing his language training in the territory in the late 1960s, I would have thought that a week or 10 days would be long enough for his visit. On Club rates the cost would be:

(a) Return passago

(b)

Subsistence allowance (10 days)

£1200.00

£ 566.20

£1766.20 maximum

Use of Apex would reduce the total to 1016.

4.

I have it in mind that Miss Walker's visit should be From 13-27 November and Mr Hum's in January or February 1984. should be grateful for confirmation that we may proceed with planning

I the visits.
