MR LUCE'S TRAVEL PLANS

1.

нке

WAUT 02718

Mr Sprague's minute of 21 March in preparation for the next meeting of the Ministerial Visits Committee, has prompted Mr Luce to give preliminary consideration to

his programme of overseas visits for the second half of 1984. He has firm plans for a major tour of the Far East and South East Asia in September and has it in mind to include in this Japan, South Korea, Burma, Thailand and (depending on the Prime Minister's movements) Indonesia. He would envisage, subject to comments from posts, making this trip during the period 12-28 September.

2.

Mr Luce's other plans are far more tentative, but he would be grateful for the views of Departments concerned on the following:

a) the Yemens and Iraq in June or July.

(Mr Luce would of course wish to avoid Ramadan and National days.) A visit to the Sudan could conceivably form part of this tour (but see (d));

b) Bahrain and Oman in November or early December. This should be about right in terms of time lapse after the State visit by the Amir of Bahrain. Mr Luce would appreciate advice on whether Saudi Arabia should also be considered;

c)

UAE, early 1985;

d) Egypt, and possibly the Sudan, in January or February 1985. Mr Luce is attracted to this idea and would welcome NENAD's views on its usefulness.
