1. The interviewer is George Yeatman, a freelance radio journalist who has broadcast for the COI to Hong Kong for 15 years. He is cooperative and well- disposed.

Hong Kong is currently one of HMG's top foreign policy priorities and is being treated accordingly. That's why I have:

kept in close touch with the negotiations

consulted closely with visitors from Hong Kong

briefed myself very thoroughly on how Hong Kong functions and what its interests are.

It would also add greatly to the interview if the Secretary of State could say anything about his previous contacts with Hong Kong. If he has any particular stories or memories which could be mentioned, we could ask Mr Yeatman to add a final question: first-hand knowledge of Hong Kong?
