Sir Geoffrey has asked me to reply to your letter

of 3 April, asking if Staff Side members of the

Senior Civil Service Council could meet him during his

forthcoming visit to Hong Kong.

As you may know, Sir Geoffrey will be in Hong Kong

for less than 48 hours. He already has a very tight

programme and I regret that he will not have time for

a meeting with the Staff Side. I can assure you,

however, that he is personally well aware of the

uncertainties of members of the Hong Kong Civil Service

with regard to the future. He is very appreciative

of the dedicated and responsible way in which they have

nevertheless continued to carry out their duties to

the benefit of the people of Hong Kong.
