BACKGROUND BRIEFING ON THE FAR EAST FOR THE SECRETARY OF STATE
1.
We spoke about background reading on China. I have the following suggestions:
a. CP Fitzgerald: The Chinese view of their Place in the World (1964 edition) - useful and concise general background.
―
b. D Bonavia: The Chinese (1982 Pelican edition): Chapter 13 "The Abacus Economy" and Epilogue recent background
-
c. Edmund S K Fung, The Sino-British Rapprochement, 1927-31 (from Modern Asian Studies No 1, 1983) useful description of a short but sensitive period in UK/China relations.
I enclose the FCO library copies of the two books, together with a photocopy of Dr Fung's article.
2. The PUS suggested that a very brief note on Korean history and Anglo-Korean contacts would be useful to the Secretary of State. I have asked Far Eastern Section to prepare this, together with a similar note on China,
and to send these items to FED by 2 April.
3. I have also prepared a short note on Chinese attitudes and sensitivities (also enclosed and copied to FED and HKD). You and FED may wish to consider whether this too might be useful, subject of course to any amendments desired.
