SECRETARY OF STATE'S TOUR OF THE FAR EAST: GIFTS
1. Posts have now submitted their recommendations for gifts to be presented during the Secretary of State's tour of the Far East. They are as follows:-
Peking
2. On the occasion of the Prime Minister's Visit in September 1982 the Chinese had no objection to gifts but did not specifically seek exchanges. The advice of the Embassy on that occasion was that unless the Prime Minister had any strong feelings she need bring no gifts. In the event the Prime Minister decided to present gifts and gave a
set of Shakespeare to Premier Zhao Ziyang and a silver cigarette box to Deng Xiaoping. Lord Carrington during his visit in March 1981 gave only minor gifts to Protocol Officers etc. The Embassy will consult the Chinese again on the subject and will report further.
Hong Kong
3. No gifts required.
Seoul
4. The Embassy advise that no major gifts are required; the MFA Protocol say that all Ministers and the President should receive gifts, but that they should only be tokens. The Embassy suggest small items of Caithness Glass, Edinburgh Crystal, Wedgwood pottery or similar. One or two extra gifts should be brought just in case.
Tokyo
5. The official Japanese MFA view is that for regular consultations such as these gifts are not required. However, experience in the
past has shown that despite this view Japanese Ministers are apt to decide at the last moment that gifts should be exchanged. The Embassy therefore, recommend that the Secretary of State bring a small gift for Mr Abe and the Prime Minister, Mr Nakasone. Gifts will not be required for calls on other Ministers.
Suggestions for Mr Abe are a)
b)
a Royal Brierley Whiskey decanter a good umbrella from specialised shop eg Swaine, Adeney & Brigg
or
c)
a book on London
For Mr Nakasone the Embassy suggest a book on London (? Above London)
