This is on the basis that a morale boosting visit to Hong Kong should take place in the first half of this year. It is not related to the talks and the plans do not cover a visit to Peking. The general proviso that the Secretary of State's programme might need to be adjusted at short notice to allow for visits to Peking and Hong Kong, remains in force.
2. Private Office cannot yet go firm on dates and detailed timing will, of course, need to be considered separately with posts. One complicating factor is the planned visit of the Belgian Prime Minister to Seoul between 15-18 April. In the light of this and of the decision that Parliament will rise for the Easter recess on 13 April, a possible itinerary might be:-
Saturday 14 April
Sunday 15 April
Tuesday 17 April
Thursday 19 April
Saturday 21 April
3.
depart London
arrive Hong Kong
visits on Sunday
calls and discussions on Monday (am)
depart for Tokyo
(pm) depart for Seoul depart Seoul for London
A visit after Easter is complicated by the Japanese holiday week beginning 29 April, during which no business
