Secretary of State's Visit to the Far East
We discussed my minute to you of 20 January and I have since shown it to the Secretary of State.
He thinks that it is not an ideal arrangement, particularly as it cuts deep into the Easter holiday. But he agrees that this is probably unavoidable. He has commented that arrangements to visit China would presumably have to be on a very provisional basis, but that a visit to Hong Kong would be a must in any case. The kind of programme we discussed on 20 January would provide for Hong Kong to be moved forward if, nearer the time, we decided not to go to Peking.
The Secretary of State agrees that we should proceed along these lines, subject to any further advice: he would be interested to have the views of Mr Luce and Sir P Cradock.
