Dear Bernard,

Thank you again for the very pleasant lunch and conversation at the Travellers' Club. And thank you also for agreeing to stop over in Hong Kong and talk to H. E. and his wife on the possibility of setting up a committee in the colony.

As I told you, some friends in Hong Kong are already beating some bushes (bushes in Hong Kong?) to rouse the interest of a few people in the Chinese business community shipping tycoons and such types. Apparently there is interest in being associated with UNICEF and doing something for needy children. The friends who are active in this are Alan Chalkley and his partner Betty Il de Fonso. I am writing to them about your visit and they will expect you.

He is one of the best journalists I know. He knows more about Asia than most Asians. Used to edit the Economic Digest in London and was a senior copy editor and correspondent for the F.T. You will enjoy meeting them both.

Nomenclature. Since Hong Kong is not a nation it cannot have a National Committee. I suggest Hong Kong Committee for UNICEF might be a suitable title. You could perhaps suggest that H. E. could give a dinner or luncheon party to selected people possibly 3 from the Chinese business community, 3 from the British and 2 for the rest (Kadoorie, the Lebanese and a Gujerati) as a starter. Mensahib would offer to be the Hon. Patroness and by pre-arrangement the guests could put their ante into a pot and make a public pledge to support UNICEF. They will need an active Executive Secretary of those astonishingly diligent ladies with good works at their nerve ends. Let me stop, I am sure you can write a much better script than that.

I think that the functions of the Committee should be:
