Thank you for copying to Andrew Bache your letter of 23 November to Stephen Gomersall about Taiwan's attitude towards Hong Kong.
2. I have to confess that my first attempt to extract a view on this from the Gaimusho was not a conspicuous success. I had forewarned the person on whom I was calling (the Head of their Analysis Division) that I was interested in any assessment they might have (however informal) of Taiwan's attitude to the agreement. When I arrived, I was treated to a rather general overview of Japan's attitude towards the agreement. I shall try again but in the meantime the following may be of interest to you and other addressees.
