General debate

The High Commissioner will make an opening statement to the Committee on UNHCR and the world refugee situation. This will be followed by a general debate which affords an opportunity for delegations to state their views on any item before the Committee. Delegations may wish to keep in mind documents submitted to the session as listed below under the relevant items. Comments of a more specific nature relating to individual items following the General Debate could best be reserved for statements under these items.

The Committee traditionally adopts decisions at the conclusion of the General Debate.

At its thirty-third session, the Committee adopted a number of decisions relating to the General Debate requesting that action be taken by the High Commissioner (A/37/12/Add.1, para. 43 (m-o)).

5. Action taken on decisions by the Executive Committee

At the request of the Government of Turkey, an item entitled "Action taken on decisions by the Executive Committee" was included in the draft provisional agenda adopted by the Committee at the close of the thirty-third session (A/37/12/Add.1, para. 111).

The Committee will have before it a document outlining the action taken by UNHCR in response to decisions taken by the Committee at its thirty-first, thirty-second and thirty-third sessions (A/AC.96/626).

International protection

The Chairman of the Sub-Committec on International Protection will introduce the report of the Sub-Committee and will submit its conclusions for adoption by the Committee.

The Director of Protection will introduce a "Note on International Protection" (A/AC.96/623) dealing with general issues.

The Committee will also have before it the relevant documents as indicated in the annotated agenda of the Sub-Committee (EC/SCP/28).

At the close of its discussion of this item, the Committee traditionally adopts general conclusions on international protection together with conclusions on the specific matters recommended by the Sub-Committee.

At its thirty-third session, the Committee adopted the following conclusions in the field of international protection requiring action by the High Commissioner: document A/37/12/Add.1, paras. 70(1)(1), 70(2)(e~f), 70(3)(e), 70(4)(d).
