Besides these contributions, it should be noted
that in the framework of the new joint cooperation project
agreed in December 1982 by Japan, the United States, the
Philippines, and the UNHCR, Japan is extending financial and
technical assistance for the upgrading of medical services
and vocational training for U.S.-bound Indochinese refugees
accommodated in the Philippine Refugee Processing Center (RPC).
This cooperation is expected to facilitate the smooth
integration of refugees entering U.S. society.
4. Acceptance of Refugees
Japan is taking measures to facilitate the acceptance
resettlement and first asylum.

Resettlement
a. In 1981, the resettlement target figure
was raised from the previous 1,000 to 3,000, and the
resettlement criteria have been relaxed. In an effort
to promote refugee resettlement, Japan has been dispatch-
ing selection teams to refugee camps in Southeast Asia
to locate refugees eligible for resettlement in Japan.
The refugees thus admitted so far to Japan for resettle-
ment number roughly 2,500.
