Possible Resettlement of Vietnamese

Refugees from Hong Kong

Thank you for copying to Alan Mason your letter of

(109)

3 August 1983 to David Mellor on this subject.

cautiously optimistic of a positive outcome!

We remain

On resettlement prospects elsewhere in South America (our telegram number 1 to South American posts, copied to you) there seem to be few grounds for optimism. In the light of responses to our telegram (we have yet to hear from Santiago or Caracas, and have sent reminders) Karl Stumpf has redirected his travel plans towards North America for this year. Apart from Asuncion, therefore, the only post from which we have received any remotely favourable response appears to have been Montevideo (a copy of their telegram number 29 to us is attached).

On the principle of leaving no stone unturned, would it be worthwhile asking Montevideo to approach the Uruguayan authorities in the same manner as our mission in Paraguay is doing?
