In the first quarter of 1983, planned development of all types of premises, in terms
terms of
of total usable floor area
shown on building plans for which consent to commence work was
given, was 55% less than in the first quarter and 25% less
than in the fourth quarter of 1982. Though these quarterly
figures are again subject to significant short term variations, they indicate the effect of the present state of
over-supply for all types of property upon the investment
intentions of developers. The floor area represented by
consents amounted to 361 000 square metres, which is lower than in any quarter since 1976.
